Researcher/Developer, Historic House Tour for McConaghy House, Hayward, California

“Victorian by Design: The Social and Cultural Meaning of Objects.” For the Hayward Area Historical Society, Hayward, California, 2013

Tour description: The historic McConaghy House offers a unique opportunity to experience first-hand a wide collection of objects from late Victorian period. What makes the study of these objects exciting is the ways in which their design, construction, and imagery convey the priorities of the era. In this guided tour, visitors will learn to “read” the visual and design elements of specific objects so as to interpret them as expressions of the values of those living in late nineteenth-century Hayward, including the McConaghy’s, but also Victorians living throughout the United States. Along the way, we will also consider how design principles subsequently changed during the modern period, signaling a shift in cultural and social priorities.

Author and co-researcher, McConaghy House (1886) Art Survey

Essay: “Not Her Mother-in-Law’s Victorian: Florence McConaghy, the Ethos of Efficiency, and Changing Attitudes Towards Displaying Art in the Home, 1886-1918.” (46 ms. pages plus notes). For the Hayward Area Historical Society, Hayward, California, 2004.

Summary: A survey of works of art in the historical McConaghy House, a Victorian home built in 1886 and now under the care of the Hayward Area Historical Society. The survey inventoried the works and provided an account of how the works might have been displayed circa 1910.
